Daily 2nd Grade Schedule

8:00 - 8:30             Arrival

  • When students arrive, they are expected to put away backpacks, folders, and lunch boxes. Students are allowed to spend the remainder of the time reading, answering a writing prompt, or utilizing the "app of the week".

8:30 - 9:30             Phonics, Spelling, and Writing (Whole Group)

  • VoWac Phonics and Spelling
  • Students will be instructed using the VoWac phonics and spelling program which uses the Orton-Gillingham approach (1/3 visual, 1/3 auditory, 1/3 kinesthetic) to teach necessary decoding and spelling skills
  • Teach Me Writing
  • Students will be instructed through modeled writing, guided practice, and independent practice in order to develop their writing skills, including vocabulary, comprehension, and concepts of print.

9:30 - 10:30             Guided Reading and Independent Centers (Small Group/Independent)

  • Students will rotate between independent work centers and guided reading with the classroom teacher. Also during this time, students who require additional remediation will meet one-on-one or in small groups with an instructional aide in place of one of the independent centers.

10:30 - 11:00             Imagination Station and ELA Intervention (Small Group/Independent)

  • Students will work independently on the computer adaptive Imagination Station Reading Program. Also during this time, students who require enrichment services will meet twice per week in small groups with the classroom teacher.

11:00 - 12:00             Science and Social Studies (Whole Group/Small Group)

  • Science
  • During science students will be instructed using the FOSS K-6 Science Kits and Science Weekly Readers. Students will participate in whole group and small group activities. Activities may include hands-on experiments and utilization of iPads to read leveled readers, watch science related videos, or listen to audio clips.
  • Social Studies
  • During social studies students will be instructed using MyWorld Social Studies and Social Studies Weekly Readers. Students will participate in whole group and small group activities which may include researching historic events, people, and places and creating age-appropriate books or videos that retell the information.

12:00 - 12:40             Lunch and Recess


12:40 - 1:40             Guided Math and Centers (Small Group/Independent)

  • Students will rotate between independent work centers and guided math with the classroom teacher. Also during this time, students who require additional remediation will meet one-on-one or in small groups with an instructional aide in place of one of the independent centers.

1:40 - 2:10             Imagination Station Math and Math Enrichment (Small Group/Independent)

  • Students will work independently on two computer adaptive programs - Imagination Station Math and Dreambox Learning. During this time, students who require additional enrichment will meet with the teacher in small groups.

2:10 - 2:40             Specials

  • Physical Education and Health (2 days/week)
  • Library (1 day/week)
  • Character Development (1 day/week)
  • Art/Music (1 day/week; rotating 6 week sessions)

2:40 - 2:50             Pack-up and Dismissal
